Dear friends and colleagues,
Shrinking budgets. Constantly changing guidelines. Dwindling broadcast licenses. Overwhelming paperwork. Less and less opportunity to make the films we care about.
We all know this has been a difficult year for the documentary industry in Canada.
Throughout 2010, DOC National has been working hard to protect the interests of our documentary community: in negotiations with the Canada Media Fund, through the Fair Dealing Road Show on copyright reform, by improving our membership’s access to promotion and distribution through DOCspace, and with our industry overview Getting Real 4.
During this period, we’ve heard two clear messages from our membership: first, you feel that your livelihoods are under threat by the present funding, broadcasting and programming environment. Second, you want DOC to do something about it. We’ve heard you and we’re ready to take action.
In the coming months, DOC will be launching a series of cross-country initiatives to:
- Raise awareness among Canadians that documentary films are an increasingly endangered species in Canada today.
- Present a united front and clear message to our funders and government decision-makers about what needs to be done about it.
Will you join us? As artists and communicators, we need your creative ideas and visual skills. Could you create a campaign video? Draw a cartoon? Write a catchphrase, poem or a song?
We’re open to all your ideas, but submissions should do one or all of the following:
- Call on our country’s love of docs
- Capture the idea that the documentary genre is under threat
- Communicate what we want done about it.
In preparation for this important campaign, we’re putting together a comprehensive media contact list. Do you have local, provincial, national or international media contacts you can share with us? Send your ideas, media contact lists and submissions to firstname.lastname@example.org with CAMPAIGN in the subject heading. The Ad Hoc Documentary Action Committee will report back to you in the new year.
Please join us! In the early 80’s, DOC (formerly CIFC) grew out of the need to support and advocate on behalf of documentary filmmakers. Now 30 years later, it’s more important than ever for us to come together to give creative voice to the plight of the documentary genre. Together we can make a difference!
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."
~ Margaret Mead
